Ancient North American rock carvings inspired these images.  The unusual mottled patterns & dark stains of this gourd resemble the minerals and patina found on rock surfaces in dry canyon walls where petroglyphs are found.  The gourd was carved, exposing the contrasting lighter interior, as petroglyphs are carved through the "desert varnish".
